Honeyfund vs Zola: Which Cash Fund Charges You Less?

If you're choosing between Honeyfund and Zola for a cash or honeymoon fund, the question that actually decides it is "how much of each gift do I keep?" โ and the honest answer is it depends on how you take the money out, and on who covers the card fee, not a single headline percentage.
The short version
The two platforms charge differently, so the winner depends on your payout. Honeyfund is free for your guests and free to you if you accept gifts as a prepaid card or gift cards โ you only pay a percentage if you want the cash deposited to a bank. Zola applies a flat 2.5% credit-card processing fee to cash gifts, but by default your guest pays it at checkout, not you โ so on Zola's default setting a card gift reaches you whole. You can switch that in your account settings to absorb the fee yourself instead, and guests who pay by Venmo trigger no fee either way.

Does Honeyfund take a percentage?
Not always โ that's the key. Honeyfund is free for guests to contribute, and there's no monthly or platform subscription. What you pay depends entirely on how you cash out:
- Take it as a prepaid Mastercard or gift cards: Honeyfund's fee page lists this as 0% โ you keep the full gift.
- Send it to PayPal/Venmo or a bank account: a processing percentage applies. Honeyfund's own fees page lists 2.2% for PayPal/Venmo and 3.5% + $0.59 for a bank deposit (verified June 2026 โ Honeyfund's pages aren't always internally consistent, so treat the exact percentage as "check it today," not gospel).
Honeyfund also uses an optional guest "tip" model to fund the free tier; that's toggleable, not a fee on you. The practical takeaway: if you're happy spending gifts as a card, Honeyfund can be genuinely free.
What does Zola charge on cash funds?
Zola applies a 2.5% credit-card processing fee to cash-fund and honeymoon-fund contributions, and states it "makes no money off of cash funds" โ the 2.5% passes through to cover the card processor (per Zola's FAQ, verified August 2026). The registry and wedding website themselves are free.
Who actually pays it is a setting, and the default is your guest. Zola lets you choose who covers the 2.5% in your account settings, and says "the default option is for guests to cover the fee โ we've found that it's the most popular selection by couples" (Zola's FAQ on choosing who covers the fee, verified August 2026). On that default it appears as a "Handling Fee" added to the guest's total at checkout, and the gift reaches you whole. If you switch it to absorb the fee yourself, it comes out when you transfer funds to your bank instead. So "Zola charges 2.5%" is only true for you if you've chosen to take it on.
The other escape hatch: when a guest pays via Venmo (from their Venmo balance, bank, or debit card), Zola's FAQ says there's no fee at all. So Zola can be zero-cost to both sides โ it just depends on how each guest chooses to pay, which you don't fully control.
Honeyfund vs Zola: the mechanisms side by side
The right comparison isn't a single percentage โ it's the model. Compare how each one can be free and what the paid path costs:
| Honeyfund | Zola | |
|---|---|---|
| Free for guests to give | Yes | Yes, unless you leave the card fee on them |
| Zero-fee payout path | Accept gift cards / prepaid Mastercard | Guest pays by Venmo |
| Paid-path fee | % only when cashing to bank/PayPal/Venmo | 2.5% card processing (pass-through) |
| Who pays that fee | You, out of the payout | Your guest by default; switchable to you |
| Platform subscription | None | None (registry + website free) |
| Also a full gift registry | Add-on / universal items | Yes โ registry + website + funds |

Which should you pick?
A quick decision rule:
- You're fine spending gifts on a card โ Honeyfund's gift-card payout is the cheapest path (often 0%).
- You want cash in your bank account โ Zola on its default setting is the cheaper route, because the 2.5% lands on the guest rather than your payout, while Honeyfund's bank deposit costs you 3.5% + $0.59. Check both the week you set up; they move.
- You'd rather your guests were never charged extra โ switch Zola's fee setting to absorb it yourself, or use Honeyfund's gift-card payout.
- You also want a registry + wedding website in one place โ Zola bundles all three, and the Venmo route keeps cash gifts fee-free for everyone.

Once the cash gifts arrive, who do you thank?
Whichever platform you pick, the hardest part of cash and Venmo gifts isn't the fee โ it's reconciling who gave what at thank-you time. A Venmo transfer or a "honeymoon fund" line doesn't come with a tidy gift label, so cash contributors are the ones most likely to slip through the cracks (and the most awkward to thank generically). See what to write in a wedding thank-you note for wording that works for cash and fund gifts too, and the whole wedding thank-you timeline, from list to mailbox for how the cash-fund names fit into the rest of the pile.
Addresses are the other half of that problem, and Zola is unusually good here: its gift tracker exports a CSV that includes each giver's address alongside the gift and thank-you status. Honeyfund contributors typically arrive with a name and an email and nothing more. Zola's gift-tracker export, and what other registries give you has the per-platform detail and what to do about the blanks.
