Yes, Shutterfly mails cards for you. Its Mail for Me service prints your return address and each recipient's address from your Shutterfly address book onto plain white envelopes, then stuffs, stamps and sends them by USPS First Class. Shutterfly prices it at $1.49 an envelope with domestic postage included, on top of what the cards cost.

It is a genuinely useful service. What the short answer leaves out is the full bill, the rules, and the one thing it cannot do for a thank-you batch.

What does a batch of cards cost with Mail for Me?

A batch has two line items: the cards and the envelope fee. Fifty of Shutterfly's Just Saying Thank You folded cards list at $2.14 each, so the cards come to $107.00 and Mail for Me adds $74.50. That is $181.50, about $3.63 a card, stamped and mailed.

Shutterfly runs card sales often: at the 50%-off price that ran through September 14, the same 50 cards came to $128.00 with Mail for Me, about $2.56 a card. The card half of the bill moves; the $1.49 envelope fee is the fixed part. We priced the published list prices and did not run a checkout. Nor is it like for like: Shutterfly's number buys a folded card in an envelope, ShipNote's a postcard.

How does Shutterfly's Mail for Me work?

You pick a card that offers the service, choose Mail for Me at the Addressing step, and tick recipients from your address book. Shutterfly prints both addresses, assembles the cards, adds postage and mails them from its facility by USPS First Class, without tracking. It estimates 5 to 10 business days for production and delivery.

The rules, all from Shutterfly's Mail Cards For Me support article:

• Plain white envelopes only. Orders that include glitter cards, custom envelopes, colored envelopes or slip-in liners are not eligible. Choose a custom envelope and the order ships to you to mail yourself.
• No tracking. Cards travel USPS First Class without a tracking number.
• One recipient per card. The number of recipients you select has to match the number of cards you buy.
• International recipients are allowed, at $1.99 an envelope; an international return address is not.

The support article calls the charge only a small fee; the $1.49 and $1.99 figures come from Shutterfly's own guide to ordering holiday cards in bulk. That guide is written for holiday cards, and we did not take a thank-you card through checkout to confirm the fee.

Where do the addresses come from?

From your Shutterfly address book, and only from there. Shutterfly gives you four ways to fill it: type contacts in, import a CSV built on its template, send people a text or email link with its Easy Address Collector, or email a file (Word, Excel, even screenshots) to its team to load for you.

The Easy Address Collector is a real answer to missing addresses, so we won't claim Shutterfly makes you type everything. The file route is slower: Shutterfly emails again within four business days, when the address book is ready.

What an address book cannot do is start from a thank-you batch as it arrives: a registry page, a pile of order emails, half the addresses missing. It holds names and addresses; the gift, which is the point of the note, has nowhere to go.

ShipNote starts from that pile. Paste the registry list, the purchase emails or a spreadsheet as it is, and AI extracts the names, the gifts and whatever addresses are in there. Any guest it couldn't address is flagged when you press Next: Review, and a flagged row offers "Don't have their address? Request it with a link". US addresses only.

Can each card thank someone for a different gift?

Not by hand, and that is the catch. Shutterfly's own advice for adding a personal note to each recipient is to leave the inside of the card blank and handwrite it after the cards arrive. With Mail for Me they never arrive at your house: they are mailed straight from Shutterfly's facility to your guests.

A Mail for Me order is one card design bought in a quantity, with a recipient ticked per copy, and we found no way on Shutterfly's card pages to print a different message for each recipient. That is right for a holiday photo card. For a wedding thank-you it means the note can't name each guest's gift unless you write it in yourself, and with Mail for Me the cards never pass through your hands.

A ShipNote message is one template, and every card fills it in from that guest's own row:

Dear [RECIPIENT], thank you for the [GIFT_NAME]. It has already earned a spot in our kitchen.

[RECIPIENT] becomes each guest's name and [GIFT_NAME] their gift, so the stand mixer and the linen napkins are each thanked by name. Any single card can still be rewritten by hand before the batch goes out.

What is Shutterfly better at?

The card itself. Shutterfly prints folded photo cards in envelopes, on four cardstocks up to a double-thick one, from a design range far larger than ours, and it will mail to recipients abroad. ShipNote prints postcards, with no fold and no envelope. If the card is the point, especially a family photo card, Shutterfly is the better choice.

Holiday cards are the clearest case: a folded photo card with a family update is what Shutterfly is built for. ShipNote has a holiday occasion and mails holiday postcards at $1.99 each on ten or more, but a postcard is a different object. Thank-yous for Christmas gifts are a separate question.

Which one should you use?

It depends on what you are mailing. For a holiday photo card or a folded card in an envelope, Shutterfly's Mail for Me is the better fit. For thank-yous from a registry, where each card should name its gift, ShipNote costs less per card and starts from a paste instead of an address book.

• A holiday photo card to everyone you know: Shutterfly with Mail for Me, as long as plain white envelopes suit you.
• A folded card or premium paper for wedding thank-yous: Shutterfly, at about $3.63 a card for 50 with Mail for Me at list price, less on sale. With Mail for Me the cards skip your house; to write each gift in by hand, have Shutterfly print the addresses, ship the cards to you, and stamp them yourself.
• Thank-yous for a registry of 20 to 100 gifts: ShipNote. Paste the list, let each card name its gift, and pay $1.99 a card on ten or more, First-Class postage included, no account.
• A handful of cards: ShipNote is $2.49 a card all-in below ten. Shutterfly lists this design at $2.28 a card under 20, plus $1.49 an envelope.
